Anger is a normal human emotion.

It has many useful qualities in coping with life’s challenges. Anger can help us persevere in difficult circumstances, serve as a survival mechanism, and help us stand up for parts of our self-esteem.

However, these important “adaptive” functions of anger are often offset by the role anger plays in creating aggressive behaviors and legal problems, damaging social relationships, and negatively affecting our health.

The origins of serious or long-standing issues with anger are complicated, and deserve thoughtful and informed attention, both in assessment and treatment efforts in order to help an individual.

The Assessment Process

  • A referral from the court or a self-initiated referral starts the process. Our support staff will schedule a time for you to meet with one of our program therapists.

  • Before beginning the interview process, you will complete a two-part self-assessment form, the Novaco Anger Scale and Provocation Inventory. This self-assessment takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete. The therapist will then incorporate the results of the assessment into your interview. The 1:1 interview will include discussing relevant parts of your history, current life situation, and issues that lead to problems with anger.

  • Your therapist will compile a recommendation based on your self-assessment and the clinical interview. This written recommendation will be made available to you as client and the court, with a signed Release of Information form.
