Our Family Life Education programs partner with parents to enhance parenting skills and advocacy efforts for children because:
- Sometimes parents discover that their child has a learning disability and need help in learning how to become their child's best advocate.
- Sometimes parents are overburdened with life's challenges and need a place to find solace.
- Sometimes parents do not have an example from their own childhood to use as a model for good parenting and need help in learning these skills.
- Always, parents want to offer a safe and hopeful future for their child.
Learning Disabilities Program:
Raising a child who struggles with school can seem overwhelming at times, but this challenge does not have to stop a child from achieving his or her goals. Our Learning Disabilities Program is here to help your family get the resources you need to promote your child’s success in school.
Learning disabilities can affect one’s ability to read, write, speak, spell, compute math, reason and also affect a person’s attention, memory, coordination, social skills and emotional maturity.
Whether on the phone or in person, we can offer you information and support to be your child’s best advocate. Our program will work with you to help your child live up to his or her fullest potential.
Children's Home Society & Family Services’ Learning Disabilities Program can help parents who:
- Worry that their child is falling behind academically
- Struggle with their child for hours every evening over homework
- Need resources in order to advocate for their child
- Need clarification on how to navigate through the special-education system
- Wonder how to get their child assessed
We can:
- Give families ideas to improve communications with school personnel
- Assist families in advocating for their child
- Provide information on federal and state special-education laws and rules
- Assist with the development of an appropriate Individual Education Program (IEP)
Dyslexia, attention deficits, emotional or behavioral difficulties, difficulties in auditory processing, information integration and memory disabilities are some of challenges of children whose families utilize the Learning Disabilities Program.
In addition to personal service, several resource lists are available through the Learning Disabilities Programe. They include Assessors and Counselors, Support Groups, and School Options.
The Learning Disabilities Program serves families of children grades K-12 in the following Minnesota counties: Anoka, Chisago, Dakota, Isanti and Ramsey.
