| Sexual abuse is a significant underlying factor in many of today's social concerns. Victims of childhood sexual abuse represent 95 percent of the young girls who are prostitutes and one out of three instances of teen pregnancy. Children who have been sexually abused are also at increased risk for eating disorders, HIV infection, sexually transmitted diseases and more. When boys who have experienced sexual abuse are not treated, society pays the price in problems of crime, suicide, drug abuse and more sexual abuse.
The goal of the Strong Families Program is to reduce the risk of child sexual abuse by nurturing young people's capacity for resilience. Our program involves children and their parent/guardian in a twelve-week series of interactive, skill-building groups that meet at convenient community locations.
Since 83 percent of cases of sexual abuse are linked to family members, our program reaches out to the whole family to create awareness and help prevent sexual victimization.
The uniqueness of our program lies in our ability to adapt to individual participants.
Strong Families:
- Is a sexual-abuse prevention program
- Consists of a 12-week series of children's groups and parent's groups, meeting separately for part of the session and working together as a family on shared knowledge for the remainder of the session
- Offers parent groups facilitated in a native language, currently Russian, English, Somali, Amharic and Spanish
- Services are completely confidential
- Services are free of charge
- Transportation assistance is available
