Ottoro School

Amongst the first of CHSFS' humantarian efforts in Ethiopia, we have been involved with the village of Ottoro for over 5 years. Ottoro is located in the Hadiya Zone of the Southern Nation, Nationalities and People's Region. This extremely rural community is breathtakingly beautiful, but a food insecure and poverty stricken area. CHSFS first began with electricity and clean water access. At the same time rooms were rented and teachers hired to begin a much needed primary school.

The school has grown tremendously! There are now over 607 students attending grades K-7. All students attend tuition-free and receive educational materials and access to vital healthcare. The school provides a high quality education and receives thousands of applications for enrollement each year. Donors to our sponsorship program help to keep the school operational and open the doors for new students each year.

Over 150 of the students are dual orphans. Many come to school in tattered clothing and empty stomachs. Much is needed to continue improving their quality of life.  Contact the ICW Team to learn how you can help, or make a donation by following the 'Give Now' link below.

It costs only $108 per child to have quality education for a year.

Hope 4 Hossana School

Currently over 250 students are learning in this CHSFS Primary School. 75 percent of the students attend tuition-free thanks to generous donors in our sponsorship program. Students under sponsorship not only receive a quality education, but also receive transportation to and from school, a new uniform and shoes, clean water, access to life-saving healthcare and participation in the school meal program.  Many students under sponsorship also have a parent participating in the Family Development Project.

The school boasts a beautiful garden that teaches children and families about sustainable gardening practices. There is a playground, a volleyball court and a small soccer field. Local officials helped CHSFS choose children most in need of educational opportunity for enrollment. The school uses a holistic approach to education and future prosperity.

The Hossana School plans to add a grade level each year until it reaches full Primary School status at 8th gradeand recently saw the addition of a 6th grade class. Contact the ICW Team to learn how you can help complete this project.

Family Development Project

This project takes a holistic approach to alleviating and eliminating poverty in Hosanna, Ethiopia.  Future entrepreneurs (most of them women) attend financial training, draft a business plan and apply for a small loan. Loans are often as little as $200.

The women then use this money to buy the raw materials and tools they need to get their idea off the ground. As the women grow their businesses, they also attend classes about money management and conflict resolution.

A small loan can be life-changing to a woman in Ethiopia:  She can use her new income to pay for her children’s education, to get medical care, or to buy food for her family.  The effects of the loan are long-lasting, because the women can continue to make a profit for years to come.  Even better: when a woman pays back the loan, the money is recycled so another woman can join the Project.

Orphanage Assistance

CHSFS maintains multiple orphanage partnerships in Ethiopia. Often these orphanages receive children who are battling things like severe malnurishment and emotional trauma. Children stay in these orphanages for a several months or years. The Orphanage Assitance project helps equip our partner orphanages with the skills, materials and equipment they need to provide quality care. Donations can be designated to a particular orphanage, if a current partnership exists.

The orphanages can often use in-kind donations as well. Items such as diapers, formula, educational/developmental toys, clothing, blankets, etc. To make an in-kind donation please contact our ICW Team.
