Help children, families and communities in India thrive.

You can help vulnerable populations in India by supporting projects designed to help them build a foundation for long-term success.

New Generation Project

The New Generation Project developed from the Female Infanticide Prevention Project (FIPP) and is located in the rural villages of Tamil Nadu. The first component of this project is a small business development program, available to families who have more than three female children. The goal of this program is to support at-risk families while they transition to self-sufficiency. Participants will be coached to set-up a goat rearing business, an already established and effective practice. Goat meat is highly valued and a regular part of the Indian diet. Some of the goats will provide milk for the families involved as well as organic manure to be sold.

The project also focuses on supporting children who are struggling to receive an education. In remote areas of southern India approximately 50% of students drop out by high school. When available, the education is of poor quality and children see little value in continuing their studies. Furthermore approximately 60% of parents are illiterate and unable to help support their children with their schoolwork. New Generation Project provides a total of six village tutoring centers. The centers have hired educated unemployed adults in the community and provided training by qualified teachers. Each class allows for 25-30 students at a time. Tutoring centers are housed in open areas or abandoned and unused community buildings.

New Generation Project Updates – Winter 2010

The small business development program has enrolled two families; an additional family is scheduled to enroll soon. Three goats were originally purchased and to-date they have littered five goats. The goats are reared on the hill side and waste lands. During the rainy season the feed that is grown in the lands owned by our partner in India is used for their food. A vet visits every week to take care of the goats. These costs are met by the sale of the manure from goats.

In March or April, when the goats are large enough, they will be sold at the market. The funds from the sale will be used as a relief measure for the family to help with clothing, possible medical issues, food and education of the children.

180 children are enrolled at the tutoring centers. The children come to classes regularly and are prepared to take their exams. Copies of progress cards are being collected; good progress is seen in the exams. Parents of the students have volunteered to help give school supplies to their children as their contribution.

In addition to the first two programs, five community health programs are scheduled during the first six months of the year. It is anticipated that 75 to 100 people will attend each program.Topics to be covered include gender equality, female infanticide prevention, healthy and hygiene.
