Projects in VietnamEven though the Vietnam adoption program is currently closed, with your help, Children's Home remains committed to improving the lives of children, families and communities in Vietnam. Vinh Quang Primary SchoolContributions given through Children’s Home made it possible to sponsor the education of 45 new children in the 2010–2011 school year, providing 12 months of food, school supplies, uniforms and tuition. Three new teachers were hired as the school enrollment grows. Operated by Catalyst Foundation, Vinh Quang Primary School educates approximately 100 children in Kien Giang province, along the southern coast of Vietnam, giving them a chance to break the cycle of poverty through education. The school is built adjacent to a garbage dump where 300 children live with their families in shacks made of refuse. For their survival, families pick through the garbage to find anything they can salvage and sell. Their lives are marked by lack of sanitation, poor nutrition and extreme poverty. These children are extremely vulnerable to human traffickers, looking for children to work in the sex trade in Cambodia, Burma and Thailand. Because of the garbage dump’s location near the Cambodian border, attempts to traffic the children who live here happen regularly. Catalyst Foundation believes the most effective way to break the cycle of poverty in a child’s life is to strategically empower whole communities by educating, providing training and employment, building safe dwellings and empowering children to stand up with dignity. In addition to the school, the Catalyst Foundation runs community development programs that provide anti-trafficking information, vocational training, small business loans, healthcare, and counseling support to children, families and the community of Kien Giang. The CNN Freedom Project: Hope for Vietnam's children of the dump Children’s Assistance FundOriginally established to provide for many children in Vietnam's orphanages, this fund primarily provides support to a few children who touched the lives of Children's Home staff. These children have special needs and were not adopted prior to the closure of international adoption between Vietnam and the United States. Donated funds provide these children with basic necessities, specialized medical care, foster care placement and educational opportunities.
