M & M Program:
An Adoption-Focused Mentoring Program

Today's youth face many challenges in the pre-adolescent and adolescent years, challenges that can become more complex when they're not sure how they fit in. The young adult adopted persons in our community remember what it was like during those times and can give friendship, wisdom and guidance to today's youth who were adopted.

Brief History of the Program

The Mentor and Mentee (M&M) program was created in 1997 by a group of four adopted Korean women. They wanted to provide young adopted Koreans with a stable relationship, fostering positive beliefs about themselves and their Korean identity. Their mission: to create friendships between younger and older adopted persons in a meaningful, positive atmosphere.

The program continues to grow and has expanded to include internationally and domestically adopted adults and youth, both males and females, from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.

Why have a mentor?

Male and female youth who joined their families by adoption, 8 years old and up, of any ethnic and cultural background are welcome to join.

Experienced staff will work to match your child with an adopted adult with similar interests and background.

Benefits of joining:

  • Specially matched mentor picked to suit your child's individual needs
  • Monthly outings with their mentor
  • Several large group activities each year which provide opportunities for mentors and mentees to get together and share their experiences
  • Participants report increased self-esteem, a widened worldview, and increased awareness of the positive aspects of racial differences, all while engaging with a positive role model who can help them appreciate their birth culture and adoption experience.

Why should I become a mentor?

A mentor is defined as a wise and trusted friend. Mentors in the M&M program are exactly that. Mentees who have been in the program speak with great enthusiasm about their new friends and advisors.

All potential mentors are screened and interviewed. They are then required to complete a mentor training, where they are familiarized with program expectations and requirements. Mentors and mentees are then matched through CHSFS's Post-Adoption Services.

M&M Mentor Training
