We are uniquely experienced in counseling adopted persons and their families. For over 120 years, Children’s Home Society & Family Services has worked with all members of the “adoption triad,” which includes the person who was adopted, members of their adoptive family, and members of their birth family.

Adoption competent therapy recognizes a variety of presenting problems and needs throughout the lives of every member of the adoption triad.

If you are looking for a therapist to meet your adoption-specific needs, be assured that the staff at CHSFS:

  • Understands the core issues that impact all members of an adoption triad, and how these issues tend to surface across each person’s lifespan
  • Views adoption from a culturally competent perspective
  • Uses strength-based strategies that help empower parents as decision makers
  • Provides outreach services when needed
  • Understands the use of, and appropriately recommends respite care and temporary out-of-home placement
  • Uses adoption-sensitive language
  • Is committed to increasing community awareness of adoption-related issues as they relate to mental health services

Adoption Consultation Option:

  • Provides support for individuals and/or families interested in a brief 1 - 3 session consultation with an adoption sensitive therapist
  • Consultations do not involve a traditional assessment and diagnosis process
  • Helps the client quickly establish short-term goals and a plan to meet their immediate needs
  • Fee for this service will be self pay, based on our sliding-fee scale

CHSFS Individual & Family Counseling offers skilled, licensed professionals who counsel children, adolescents and adults through every aspect of individual and family development.

Our staff has experience with the dynamics specific to the adoption experience. Our therapists will be sensitive to those dynamics while working with you and your family with other concerns and goals. We can help guide the way to a more productive and fulfilling life.
